The Lake of Zug
lake zug
Lake Zug or the Lake of Zug is a small yet spectacularly scenic lake in Switzerland north of Lake Lucerne on the outskirts of the Alps. It is formed by the Aa, flowing down from the Rigi into the southern area of Lake Zug. Its area is about 39 sq. km. It is 9 miles long and 200 m deep at the deepest point. It has an altitude of 417 m. The bigger part is located in the canton of Zug, but the southern end lies in the canton of Schwyz. Part of the lake is on the territory of Lucerne canton. Part of Lake Zugs east shore descends to the foot of the majestic Rossberg and Zugerberg mountains.
The promontory of Buonas, with a number of historical and modern chateaus, is located on the west shore of Lake Zug. Three railroads follow the lakeshore from Zurich to St. Gotthard, from Zurich to Lucerne and from Lucerne to St. Gotthard. A wide variety of fish live in the lake, including carp and pike of considerable weights. The lake is famous for the Salmo salvelinus, an endemic variety of trout. The first steamer sailed across Lake Zug in 1852.

Cities on the lake
The major city on the lake is, well, Zug. Other cities in the area are Cham and Arth. Zug is the capital of Zug canton, a picture-perfect small town at the foot of the Zugerberg. The main monument of the town is the 52-m high Zytturm tower, which has an astronomic clock. It was a watchtower in the past. It offers a panoramic view of the lake. The embanked lakeshores form a promenade, permitting great views of the highlands of Bern, Rigi and Pilatus with their snow-capped peaks. The historical district of Zug has four surviving wall towers and a small section of the old town walls. Other attractions in Zug include the church of St. Oswald, the former town hall, the modern church of St. Michael, and a Capuchin convent leaning against the town wall. The church of St. Oswald is named after Northumbrian king Oswald and was built in the late 1400s. In 1485 one of his arms was transported to Zug. The town hall dates to approximately the same period. Today it is home to the Antiquarian and Historical Museum. The fine church of St Michael is situated higher up, outside the historical area. It was consecrated in 1902.

Sports and activities
Among the recreational activities in the area of Lake Zug are alpine skiing, curling, ice skating, golf, tennis, hiking, water sports (sailing, swimming, surfing, water skiing), mini-golf and cycling. A summer vacation on Lake Zug is destined to remain a very fond memory. The nearby Kemmatten Village has one of the best bathing facilities, Hnenberg Beach. The Hnenberg Tennis Club is near the beach with three courts. Hnenberg Volleyball Club offers two courts for beach volleyball. There are spaces for around 60 boats and surfboards at the Dersbach dry dock. You can reserve boat parking spaces by calling the Municipal Business Commission. The well-maintained hiking and cycling track network is highly appropriate for families. There are barbecue areas alongside the tracks, where you can stop to relax and enjoy a fine meal. There is a myriad of playgrounds for children in the area.

Visitors can observe rare plants and birds at the Reussspitz nature reserve and bird habitat. The Butzen country inn is close to here. Storks nest on its roof, and their everyday life can be observed through a permanently installed camera. You can take a leisurely stroll downhill from Hnenberg in horse carts or carriages.

The industrial nature walk of Lorze chronicles the utility of hydraulic power of the Lorze. It begins at the confluence of the Lorze in Cham and extends almost to the Reussspitz. This is an interesting and informative tour. The nearby Risch Municipality ensures that golfers will get their moneys worth and more on the public green, with 18 holes and a driving range. There are some excellent skiing areas less than an hour away from the shores of Lake Zug. Bsch/Rothus sports center offers gym classes for fitness lovers. After a day of exhaustive recreation, you can enjoy a traditional Swiss dinner at one of the welcoming eateries on the lakeshores. There are many other leisure and business facilities in the area.

Events
Lake Zug hosts a famous annual event, the Swiss Inline Cup. This circular 40-km route around the lake is a race of cult status. The competition ensures great fun and excitement, acquaints visitors with the latest products in the field and provides advice and information about this enjoyable sport.
