Mondsee
lake mond
Mondsee neighbors with the larger lake Attersee in Upper Austria, in the resort area of Salzkammergut. The town of Mondsee lies on its shores. Once property of the imperial salt chamber, Salzkammergut has become an attractive destination with hiking, cycling, bathing and golfing opportunities. Water sports are popular here. In 1997 Salzkammergut was classed as a World Heritage Site due to the fact that salt mining began here as far back as 2000 BC. This resource served to sustain the economy of the region until the mid-1900s. The prosperity is evident in the elegant architecture of Hallstatt town.
The region also has excellent cuisine and a natural landmark, the Katrin Alpin Pasture near the town of Bad Ischl. The southwestern shore of Mondsee forms the border between the states of Salzburg and Upper Austria, and also between the sandstone zone of the Northern Alps and the Northern Limestone Alps. An attraction on the shore of Mondsee is the Dragonwall. The Northern Limestone Alps are Eastern Alps mountain ranges, extending from Vienna and Wienerwald in Lower Austria in the east to Bregenzerwald in Vorarlberg in the west. These ranges draw alpinists from all over the world with their great elevations. The peaks are Parseier Spitze at 3038 m and Dachstein at 2996 m.

The lake has an area of 14.2 sq. km and is 68 m deep at the deepest point. Its inflows are Zeller Ache and Fuschler Ache, and its outflows are Seeache, which flows into Attersee. The lake is very beautiful with the Drachenwand mountain in the backdrop. In the evening it is simply picture perfect.

Historical significance
Remains of stilt houses were found in Mondsee in 1864, dating back to the Neolithic age. Also known as pile dwellings, these are structures raised on stilts over soil or water surfaces. They were very common in the alpine area in prehistoric times. These dwellings are still common in parts of West Africa and Southeast Asia today.

Fishing
There are great fishing opportunities in Mondsee, with a sheer diversity of fish living in the lake. These include rainbow trout, brown trout, red trout, esox, lake char, carp, whitefish, burbot, European eel and cichlid.
