Chapter 6 - Skiing styles
Mogul Skiing
Skiing does not refer only to well-groomed terrains; it can include also pistes with uneven areas like mounds or humps of snow, called mogul fields. Actually, the moguls are natural forms on the terrain, which can increase in size when skiers pass over, or make turns around them. Most of the followers of downhill skiing face the bumps as a problem on the slope and try to avoid such an obstacle. But with a special approach, more skills and techniques, you can learn how to manage with moguls and ski around them.
Chapter 1

Although you need to obtain the basic skills, many additional exercises are needed. Once you become an advanced mogul skier, you will see that bumps might not be an obstacle and the sport is easy to master. You are determined to learn mogul skiing? Then it is better to start learning on small bumps and choose a not very steep terrain. They both can be very dangerous to beginners and that is why it is preferable to avoid Black Diamond trails. Many ski resorts have set aside certain areas with artificially made bumps, where skiers can practice. Since there is still space where the person can ski out of the moguls, these pistes are more appropriate and safe for exercises. In mogul skiing, you should not always avoid the bump itself and try to go around it or choose the troughs. Just go up directly onto the top of the mogul and use it to turn into another position or slide on the front side to control your speed. A great attention is required in order to watch out for the bumps, because they are coming fast, one after another. Nevertheless, remember to follow your main track and even if you change the route, keep an eye on the major line. Thus, you will avoid unpleasant surprises, such as a pine tree that pops out suddenly in front of you.

This sport requires active straining the muscles of your legs, so it is good that you make some special training before hitting the mogul terrain. Your ankles and knees also play an important role in the exercise when being on the bump, you have to flex them in order to keep yourself from being thrown out of the mogul. Extending your body in a tall position on the back side of the mogul will help you change the direction, or if you ski in a trough to keep track of the edges. In order to manage well the moguls and maintain control while speeding, you have to learn using side slips and stopping aside. Thus, you will improve your overall technique and reflexes while skiing through moguls and especially sliding on the bump edges. Another useful tip is to use your ski poles as a device, controlling your balance and maintaining your rhythm in skiing. While skiing fast and concentrating on the moguls, nobody is insured against loosing control of the centre of his weight and falling backwards. For this reason, get used to keep the poles in front of you and move them simultaneously with your turns. Mogul skiing is not safe, it hides a danger from injuries all of the time. What you can do to protect yourself is to ski with a helmet on your head and keep a moderate speed level. It is better not to speed up too much and ski professionally, then to accelerate the speed and get tired too soon or make mistakes which can lead to negative consequences.
