Chapter 7 - Ski safety "on the slope"
Skiing is a very exciting sport but it can be dangerous if you do not follow the safety instructions. The preparation before hitting the slopes is as much important, as your behavior on the piste. Being precautious and responsible about your safety while skiing will reduce the risk of getting injured.

Ski safety

In particular, you need to consider the following advices and raise your attention while being on the slope. Get informed about the weather forecast and snow conditions before the day when you plan to ski and in the morning of the same day. The weather in the mountains (especially the areas over 2000m) is changing very fast at times and it is not possible to predict it precisely in advance.

That is why you should take some warm clothes and equipment in your baggage, no matter that sun is shining in the morning. It can change soon to a cloudy sky and bad weather.

Avoid going in the mountains alone, take a skiing partner and do not lose each other of sight. Not only it is more enjoying to ski with someone else but in case of injury you can help each other. It is good if your ski friends are at the same ski level as you are, but if someone lefts behind on the slope, do not forget to wait for him. In the beginning of the skiing day, do not go directly to the steepest slope. Make several descents on some easy pistes and ski at slow speed until you warm up.

You should know perfectly your skiing skills, so do not try to go beyond your abilities. Choose pistes that correspond to your ski level and if by chance you find yourself at a slope for more advanced skiers, just go aside and ski carefully down. Do not lose your trail and avoid going off pistes. Backcountry slopes require special skills and preparation, so if you are not sure in your capabilities, better not go at all. Keep yourself away from the areas with risk of avalanches, as well as steep slopes with abundance of stones and scarcity of vegetation.

During skiing you energize your muscles and engage your strengths in the activity. That is why you should drink enough amount of water against dehydration. As for drinking alcohol, it does not combine well with exercising sports. If you plan to go skiing on the next day, do not stay until very late and drink too much.

At the moment you feel yourself tired, take the reasonable decision - just stop and take a rest. Otherwise you will get yourself very exhausted and increase the chance of getting an injury. After an hour break you will feel your energy replenished and you will be ready to hit again the slopes.
