Chapter 5 - Ski lessons - Ski schools - types and choosing the proper ski school
Ski Lessons
After learning everything about the ski equipment, behavior on skis and being psychologically prepared, it is now time to have the proper skiing lessons. If you are a beginner that has never faced mountain environment, signing up on a ski school is very important. You may ask a friend or acquaintance to show you the basic movements and techniques, giving you practical advices, but it would not be enough. It is also an advantage if you are fit, strong and can keep balance thus you will be able to survive falls and make easily maneuvers.
Obtaining proper lessons will be more useful to you than trying to acquire skiing skills on your own. Subscribing to a ski school will provide you knowledge how to ski correctly.

According to the age range, there are different types of ski schools: for the kids, for the teens and for the senior enthusiasts that have desire to learn the secrets of ski sport. It is better to know the specific differences about each type because it may appear that you are already familiar with the material that is going to be taught and more experienced than the rest in your ski class. You have to know also that there are specialized ski classes, such as for women and for people with physical disabilities.

Ski School for children
This type of school is for children in the range (3-12 years). There are schools established on the basis of a fenced territory aside from the slopes, others are represented by themed terrain gardens. Whatever the type is, the ski instructors have to be aware of the fact that children need amusement in order to be interested and you cannot catch their attention for a long time. For this reason games on snow are organized and some other methods are applied to entertain children while teaching the basics of skiing. Thus, children have both fun and learn the different basic moves in skiing.

Teen Classes
These classes are aimed for 13-17 years old teens. The adolescents have to combine school attendance with ski lessons, so these schools are mostly being held during the school holidays. In the teen classes the tactics have to be directed more on practical lessons than on the theoretical part, the subscribed are also interested more on the entertainment in skiing than on becoming professionals. For that reason, the instructors in teen classes are relatively young in order to explain in understandable way the moves and techniques.

Special programs for senior citizens
For many people above middle age would be more convenient to have as colleagues coevals who are in the same physical shape and share the same views. Thus, seniors will not be urged to follow the speed of learning of the younger participants.

All-female ski classes
There are many women who feel more comfortably if they are only among other women in the ski class and have a woman as a teacher. There is a comprehension that there is no other than a woman that can understand how a woman feels. Moreover, women feel better when giving support to each other and can overcome together the fear during the process of learning how to ski.

Adaptive ski schools
Disabled people can also enjoy skiing just like people without physical disabilities. Special adaptive skiing equipment is used in courses, as well as instruction programs, and teaching techniques.

Another factor you have to consider before subscribing to a ski school is to determine your skiing ability in order to choose the proper class level. If you are a novice, as usual you have to sign up in A-level class, while people who have already obtained some skills and have some experience on the slopes, can prefer going directly to B-level. As a rule, a class is assembled by skiers with more or less the same skiing abilities.

You also have to think about the possibility whether to sign up in a group or you prefer to be taught in private. In the second case the ski instructor will concentrate his attention only on you, he will be able to notice better your mistakes and correct you. From another point of view, it is more expensive and being in a group means you will have more fun among the others and getting experience together with them. The choice is yours.

Last but not least important is the number of students in class. Bear in mind that the more the students are, the more distracted the instructor will be among them. In general, the most appropriate size of a ski class is 7-10 people.

When you become a pro, you can think about getting some specialized skills in the discipline you have oriented to. Here you can just have a notion about the ski disciplines, among which are: alpine skiing, telemark skiing, cross country skiing, freestyle skiing, speed skiing and ski jumping. Related skiing disciplines: water skiing, roller skiing, grass skiing, heli skiing and the different types of snowboarding.
