The combined valleys of Alpbach and Wildschoenau offer a total of more than 100 km of slopes, creating one of the largest ski areas across the Austrian Tyrol. Over the years, the two valleys functioned completely separately. It was not until 2012 that a gondola had been erected, connecting the Wiedersberger Horn station in Alpbach (44 km of trails) with the Schatzberg resort in Wildschoenau (41 km of trails), forming a sizable ski network. The towns, which are 40 minutes away from each other by car, were connected by a gondola lift, which shortened the journey to about 15 minutes.
The ski station located near the top of Wiedersberger Horn (2,128 m) of the same name offers over 40 km of intermediate and easy routes, which are accessible via lifts placed in several areas of the Alpbach valley. You can ski here from a height of 2025 m, and the greater part of the routes leads through forest sections. In the resort you will find some nice long trails from the top, down into the valley, at an altitude of 1000–1050 m.
After skiing down from Wiedersberger Horn to the Alpbach valley, near the town of Inneralpbach, you can immediately take the Verbindungsbahn Ski Juwel I gondola lift, which takes skiers and snowboarders to the trails of Schatzberg. Among the available 41 km of routes here, 33 are marked red. The landscape also features a few blue and black runs. The longest trail in the area is the red “number one”, leading from the top (1903 m) to the town of Auffach over a distance of 7 km, the altitude difference is 1,050 m. Several very long red ski runs routed to the peak are broad open spaces, ideal for wide carving turns performed at high speeds.
In Niederau, 9 km away from Auffach, lifts have been erected that take skiers to the trails of the Markbachjoch resort. 24 km of routes (6 km black, 12 km red, 6 km blue) run to Niederau through the forest from two local peaks: Markbachjoch (1500 m) and Lanerkoepfl (1600 m). The local routes are steeper than in the nearby Auffach, however, there are also a lot of flat slopes for beginners at the lower station of the gondola.
The smallest resort in the region is the second resort in Alpbachtal. The red and blue slopes located above Reith im Alpbachtal have a total length of 6 km. The area is suitable for families with children, especially because access to the ski runs is possible directly from the town.
